Phuket is the Andaman's ferry terminal: half the sea's famous names are a day boat away. The craft is matching trip to temperament — and knowing when the quiet option beats the famous one.

The marquee trips

• Phi Phi: the scenery is genuinely world-class; the crowds are genuinely world-class too. Honest play: early-departure small boats, or better, overnight on Phi Phi Don so you see Maya-bay country before and after the day-trip window. Note Maya Bay's conservation-driven access rules change — check current status;
• Phang Nga Bay: drowned-karst wonderland — hongs (sea caves) by canoe, James Bond Island's photo, stilt-village Ko Panyi. Choose itineraries that paddle the quiet corners over those that sprint the checklist;
• The Similans (roughly Oct/Nov–May, park season): the Andaman's clearest water and famous dive sites, a long speedboat or better a liveaboard from the Khao Lak side — the serious snorkel/dive day (more);
• Racha & Coral islands: the short-hop swim-and-snorkel standards south of Chalong — good half-days when time is tight.

The connoisseur's picks

• Ko Yao Noi & Yai: twenty minutes east and twenty years calmer — rubber farms, empty lanes, Phang Nga views. Go for a day, wish you'd stayed a week;
• Ko Lone / Ko Naka and the near islets: local boats, no flotillas;
• Or skip the boat: green-season seas make some trips miserable — that's an Old Town or viewpoint day being handed to you.

Boat wisdom

• Big boats beat small speedboats in swell; morning departures beat afternoon chop;
• Overloaded or lifejacket-scarce boats are a no — pick operators who brief safety like they mean it;
• Reef rules: no touching, no standing, no feeding, reef-safe sunscreen — the Andaman you came for depends on it.
